โ Common UK Credit Myths (Busted)
Checking my own credit hurts my score
Checking your own score (a "soft inquiry") never affects it. Hard inquiries from lenders have a small, temporary impact (~5 points).
I need to carry a balance to build credit
False. Paying in full every month is ideal. Carrying a balance only costs you interest with no credit benefit.
Debit cards build credit
Debit cards don't appear on your credit report. Only credit products (cards, loans, mobile contracts) build your score.
My Indian CIBIL score transfers to UK
No. Credit bureaus don't share data across borders. Your UK file starts empty โ treat it as a fresh start.
I can boost my score quickly by taking out a loan
Loans help long-term, but hard inquiries and new credit can temporarily lower your score 10โ20 points.
