Go from zero US credit to 750+ in 24 months. A step-by-step guide for F-1 students starting from scratch.

Most F-1 students arrive with no US score (treated as ~550โ580). With consistent effort, reaching 700+ in 12 months is achievable.
Get your SSN (or ITIN)
An SSN is the foundation of your US credit. Apply as soon as you have OPT or on-campus work authorization. If you can't get an SSN yet, apply for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) using Form W-7 โ many credit products accept ITINs.
๐ Action:
Apply at your local Social Security Administration office. Bring passport, I-20, and work authorization.
Open a US bank account
A US checking account is required to apply for most credit products. Chase, Bank of America, and Zolve allow F-1 students to open accounts without an SSN in the first year.
๐ Action:
Open a Chase College Checking or Zolve account. No SSN required if you apply in person (Chase) or online (Zolve).
Consider a no-credit-needed starter card
Deserve EDU, Zolve, or Nova Credit offer credit cards specifically for international students with no US credit history. These report to the major bureaus and start building your score immediately.
๐ Action:
Apply for Deserve EDU (no SSN needed) or Zolve Credit Card. Start with a small limit (~$500โ$1,000).
