How I Got My SSN as an F-1 Student (Step-by-Step)

Just got my SSN approved โ€” here's exactly what worked. Step 1: Wait until you're within 30 days of your program start date (SSA won't process before then). Step 2: Get your university ID and enrollment letter. Step 3: Visit your local SSA office with: Passport, F-1 visa, I-20, university enrollment letter, and any employment authorization if applicable. Step 4: The SSA will mail your card within 2โ€“4 weeks. Important: You do NOT need an ITIN first โ€” that's a common misconception. ITIN is only for people who are NOT eligible for an SSN. As an F-1 student with work authorization, apply directly for SSN at the SSA.

Just went through this process myself. One thing that saved me time was calling ahead to confirm what documents they'd accept. Some offices are stricter than others.

Perfect timing! I'm arriving next month and this guide is incredibly helpful. Did you have any trouble with the office being crowded?

Saved this post for later. Really thorough breakdown of the entire process. Will definitely share with my roommate who's just starting this journey.
